Turkish Tango en Kanto Music from Istanbul

…imagine travelling in time with Tombaz… the year is 1930, it is late and the doors of the theatre have just closed. Form far away we can faintly hear melancholic tango sounds. The last of tonight’s audience are disappearing into the spring night, some of them still humming happy kanto melodies. Tomorrow’s performance: operetta.

Join Tombaz on a nostalgic journey, reminiscing the days of bakelite records.

Tombaz was founded in 1998 by the couple Meral Ari Tuğa and Emirhan Tuğa. Their fascination for Argentine tango music and its dance sparkled their curiosity for the Turkish tango. By listening to old recordings they became even more motivated and compiled a repertoire that was received with enthusiasm. The ensemble has since extended its repertoire by playing not only tangos but also kantos, operetta music and other popular songs from the first half of the last century.

Tombaz will take you along to the Istanbul of the thirties. The ensemble brings its repertoire of melodic tango’s, cabaretesque kantos and operetta songs in a setting of poems, sketches and dance.

Tombaz brings new life to this old music that has fallen into oblivion. The show, with a lot of surprising moments, humour and antique costumes, makes you feel like you are at an old-fashioned musical cabaret.
